Goods worth up to €430.00 can be purchased duty free
Some merchants and traders have specialised in very particular goods and services with the result that customers can benefit from premium goods. The tax exemption originated in the times of the British rule from 1807 to 1890. When the island was handed over to the German empire, it was stipulated that the special regulations introduced under the British rule should remain in place even under German control.
